I am using these to strip a finish off a log home. I am actually using a smaller backing plate for a smaller 7 inch disc. So unfortunately I am not using the entire surface of these. However for my application the outer 2 to 3 inches is all I use as my logs have 3 finishes over them and the smaller backing plate allows me to tip the grinder way up so the disc is folding towards the grinder. This way it leaves minimal or no swirls in the wood. As a DIYer this product, 5he way I am using it has made me more productive than crews of 5 people stripping log homes! The discs will however plug up when I get into this way like substance that was previously used to seal some joints. The discs are very durable. Just keep them inside and dry or they will curl up... If they get wet or any solvent on them just dispose of them and do not use them. I had a previous brand that got a solvent on them and when it snapped it tangled the grinder in my shirt. Shredded my shirt and sliced my stomach and chest up good. So use common sense and be safe! These are the only discs I will ever use for stripping any finish in the future!
I am a timber framer and these big discs are great for resurfacing large timbers. They can completely remove the weathered appearance and all bandsaw chatter marks, or selectively remove darkened saw marks to give a reclaimed appearance. Using a finer grit on the edges gives timbers a lightly worn appearance that is more natural than a uniform bevel done with a router bit.
Just got done cleaning the weather and paint off a 2 x 4 that was laying in the dirt for 15 years. It took longer to clean myself than taking the board down to plain wood.
