3-Inch Cut Off Wheels for Die Grinders and Air Cut-Off Tools
Three-inch cutting discs are the standard size for air cut-off tools and die grinders used in automotive, exhaust, and tight-clearance fabrication work. At 3″, you get more cutting depth and disc life than a 2″ disc while still fitting into spaces that rule out a 4.5″ angle grinder. The four discs in this line split across two variables: thickness and arbor size. Pick the right combination for your tool and your job using the table below.
Which 3″ Cut Off Wheel Is Right for Your Job?
| Disc | Thickness | Arbor | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| BHA 1/16″ — 1/4″ Arbor — 25 Pack | 1/16″ | 1/4″ | General and aggressive cutting on steel, rod, pipe, and bar stock; more disc life per cut |
| BHA 1/16″ — 3/8″ Arbor — 25 Pack | 1/16″ | 3/8″ | Same aggressive general cutting; direct mount on 3/8″ air cut-off tools without a mandrel |
| BHA 1/32″ — 1/4″ Arbor — 25 Pack | 1/32″ | 1/4″ | Precision cuts where kerf loss matters; bolt studs, exhaust flanges, stainless hardware |
| BHA 1/32″ — 3/8″ Arbor — 25 Pack | 1/32″ | 3/8″ | Same precision thin-kerf cutting; direct mount on 3/8″ air cut-off tools without a mandrel |
Arbor Size: 1/4″ vs. 3/8″
The arbor determines which tools the disc mounts to without an adapter. Air cut-off tools most commonly run a 3/8″ arbor -- the discs mount direct, no mandrel required. Die grinders typically run a 1/4″ collet. If you are running a die grinder and need a 3/8″ disc, you will need a 1/4″ x 3/8″ mandrel. If your die grinder collet is 1/4″, the 1/4″ arbor discs mount direct. Check your tool’s collet or spindle size before ordering -- the discs are otherwise identical within each thickness pairing.
1/16″ vs. 1/32″: Choosing by Kerf and Application
The 1/16″ disc is the right call for general shop cutting: bar stock, pipe, angle iron, rod, and bolt removal where disc longevity matters more than kerf precision. It handles aggressive work without wearing down on a single cut. The 1/32″ disc cuts a narrower kerf -- less material removed, less heat at the cut line, cleaner edge on the remaining piece. That matters on exhaust flanges where you need the surface flat for reassembly, on bolt studs being trimmed close to a thread, and on stainless hardware where heat discoloration is a problem. The 1/32″ wears faster on heavy stock, which is why both options come in 25-count packs.
Safe Use of 3″ Cut Off Wheels
All four discs in this line are rated at 25,000 RPM. If you are moving up from a 2″ disc setup, note that the Max RPM drops from 30,000 to 25,000 at 3″ -- verify your tool’s no-load speed before swapping disc sizes. Do not use these discs for side grinding or lateral pressure applications. Cutting discs are rated for edge-cutting only. Wear eye protection and a face shield. Use the appropriate guard for your tool type.
